Mom’s Words of Wisdom

Those who know me know I’ve never really taken an interest in cooking. Somehow it just seemed like a big hassle—lots of work, lots of time, lots of added expense in ingredients and equipment. But for the past couple of months (to my mother’s delight) I’ve been bitten by the cooking bug and haven’t looked back. Suddenly, I want to try everything!

It reminds me a lot of when I started stamping. You know, back when there seemed like so much to discover and explore…tools, supplies, techniques and ideas. I didn’t know what I didn’t know—and so I experimented a lot more, made do with things I had, and although I created complete disasters on a regular basis, it was fun and exciting and I couldn’t wait to get into my shoe box full of stamps and play.

So when I was talking to my mom (who is an amazing cook) on the phone last week, she said, “Just don’t expect that everything you cook will be perfect. You have to practice, and you have to be patient.” (She then went on to describe a meatloaf crisis from my parents’ early days of marriage.)

I think that’s such an important thing to remember with any hobby…and especially after my own rice-and-beans disaster this week. Not everything will be perfect. Not everything comes together easily. And sometimes you just have to practice until you get it right. I think I’ll give that rice-and-beans dish another go.

PS. On a less philosophical note, have you gotten your Paper Wishes yet? My wish list is pages and pages long!!
